Baker of the week – Kat The Baking Explorer
Congratulations Kat you are our star baker of the week! Thank you for taking some time to answer our questions.
How did you first get into baking?
Like many of us, I was inspired by The Great British Bake Off to start baking. I challenged myself to make one thing off every episode of the show and I did that for 4 years, so I got to try out lots of different recipes and baking techniques.
What is your favourite thing to bake? Cookies, they cool quickly and don’t need decorating so I can eat them faster!
What advice would you give to someone who is starting out baking? You will make mistakes and that’s ok, don’t let it deter you, it’s an opportunity to learn and improve. Most of all, enjoy yourself!
Do you have a favourite flour to use and why?
I like a good quality strong white bread flour as I absolutely love making and eating homemade bread. As bread has so few ingredients, the flour is really the star of the show and a good quality one makes all the difference.
Who inspires you?
Mary Berry is my ultimate baking icon. She has had such a long and sucessful career of creating delicious recipes that have become classics in kitchens across the world. She’s such a warm and positive person too, and she always has something nice to say about every baked good she comes across. I’ve seen her do recipe demos at food shows several times and she lights up the room and makes everyone smile, at the same time as baking something yummy!
Where can our readers see your photos / recipes?
They can find all of my recipes over on thebakingexplorer.com, there’s over 300 to choose from so you’re sure to find something for everyone.
And finally, what do you do with all of your delicious baked goods once you’ve made them? We’d struggle not to eat them all!
I give them away to my neighbours, friends and family, the staff at my son’s nursery, and I use a food sharing app called Olio so members of my local community can enjoy them too. Sharing my baking with other people is one of my favourite things to do!
