Did you know...?
Traditionally the Irish bake their loaves in a classic round fashion and cut a cross on top of the bread. This was done for superstitious reasons, and is still commonly done today, as it was believed that a cross on top of the bread would let the fairies out to ward off evil and protect the household!
- Baker: Sophie Carey
- Makes: 1 medium loaf of soda bread
- Prep time: 10 to 15 minutes
- Bake time: 35 minutes
- Flours used: YQ (or Strong Stoneground Wholegrain) & Canadian Strong White Flour (or AP Regen)
Method:
- Combine all dry ingredients
- Rub the fat into the flour
- Pour in the buttermilk and combine with a butterknife then knead until combined
- Shape into a round and place into a round pre-heated skillet
- Top with bran and score
- Bake in the oven at 200 degrees C for 35 minutes (fan 180 degrees C)
- Allow to cool on a wire rack, smear with butter, serve and enjoy!
*Top tip: Squeeze some fresh lemon into whole milk and leave for 5 mins to make quick and easy buttermilk
