Grams to Teaspoons: Conversion Table for Sugar, Flour, Salt and More Ingredients
How many grams are in a teaspoon?
There is no ‘one answer’ to how many grams are in a teaspoon because it depends on the ingredient you are cooking with and its density. A teaspoon is a volume measurement, whereas grams are a unit of mass. Sugar, flour, salt and yeast all have different densities, and so each teaspoon will have a different weight.
For this reason, we have prepared some simple tables for you to see at a glance how many grams are in a teaspoon of the most commonly used baking ingredients.
For the purposes of measurement, we are referring to level teaspoons rather than heaped teaspoons.
What size is a teaspoon?
In case you’re wondering, the humble teaspoon is around 5ml. We say around because of course there’s the US size at 4.9289ml and the UK metric size of 5ml. The difference is so marginal it’s best not to get too hung up on this. A teaspoon is also the same as ⅓ of a tablespoon (tbsp).

Is it better to use teaspoons or grams in recipes?
The answer to this one depends on the sensitivity of your scales and how adept you are at using them. Some professional cooks still prefer using a good old fashioned accurate teaspoon measurement for sensitive ingredients such as baking powder, yeast or spices. Being able to clearly see how much you are measuring can be useful, if you have the correct amounts written in your recipe.
